Language Special Education - acronyms you should know 10

The system of special education in Ontario has a language all their own. If you are parents of a child who was exceptional as recently identified by the school, you can get lost in the language during your meetings before school. There are many abbreviations by school administrators and school personnel used, and often do not think that the fact that parents may not understand their "language". So it's up to parents to become proficient in the language of special education. In this article I want to explain the importance of the ten most important symbols in the field of special education.

IEP - individual education plan.

The IEP is a document that lists the strengths and needs and programs, services, accommodation and support required by a particular student. It lists the annual objectives in each area on alternate or modified, and the learning expectations for each term are determined by the students strengths and needs. A student should not be formally considered as an outstanding student, an IEP will be identified. But if the student is formally identified by an IPRC, is a requirement of Regulation 181/98 of the Education Act, are eligible for an IEP.

IPRC - Identification, Placement and Review Committee.

The IPRC is composed of at least three persons, one of whom must be a principal or supervisory officer of school council. At the annual meeting, where parents are invited to participate, the committee decides whether the student is not identified as exceptional, and if so, what category of exceptionality. You must also choose an appropriate placement for the student. Parents may accept the decision or appeal against decisions.


OEN - Ontario Education Number

The parents will notice on the ESO-school records, as the report card. A unique OEN is allocated for each student in the province of the Ministry of Education. The same number will follow the student through his primary and secondary education and are given to all his school records.

OSR - Ontario Student Record

The OSR is a record of a student's educational progress through school. The contents should be used by school staff in order to "improve education" student under the School Act. The parents have the purpose of the OSR and its contents will be informed. They have allowed to have access to all information contained in the OSR.

EQAO - Education Quality and Accountability Office

EQAO is an arm's length agency that provides information about student achievement in Ontario, based on regular evaluations. This is basically to see how teachers perform, school authorities and the education system in general. When students are in grade 3 and again in the 6th grade are required to take administered reading, writing and math tests by the EQAO. They are also required to take a math test in grade 9th However, the client is free to students is prevented, or approved the totality of the evidence, if you are not involved for reasons such as a developmental disorder.

Special Education Resource Teacher SERT

Is usually one in every school. As the name suggests, this teacher is a resource for teachers in the classroom. He or she consults with teachers for students who have IEP and placed in regular class. In fact, the SERT is usually the one who performs the task of developing the IEP for these students. Sometimes there are small groups of students are taken in a normal classroom resources for more intensive instruction in mathematics and language. This class will run from SERT.

EA - Educational Assistant

EA, the class is assigned to classrooms, regular employment or small, the students in the context of a multidisciplinary team to support. They also help teachers with teaching duties. In some school boards, EA may have the same functions as described below for SNAS have.

SNA - Special Needs Assistant

The SNA supports students with special educational needs, usually in a special education classroom, under the supervision of a special education teacher. In addition to helping with their learning tasks required, students can arrange the safety and physical needs such as hygiene and nutrition, as well as support for the therapy sessions.

ABA - Applied Behaviour Analysis

ABA methods are best suited for the treatment of people with autism and other developmental methods disabilities.ABA based on scientific principles of learning and behavior to provide useful repertoire of behavior and to reduce problematic base known. The undesirable behavior (s) are clearly defined and recorded, and the history and reinforcement of undesirable behavior (s) are analyzed. Customized programs are developed on the basis of this information. The teacher should collect and analyze data on an ongoing basis to measure the progress of each student in the program areas. The program must be modified as necessary to maintain or increase the success of a student.

TEACCH - Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication handicapped children together.

Intervention strategies, expectations are clear and explicit, visual and physical structure, programs, systems of work and organization of activities. The aim is that children with autism to develop, skills that enable them to independently direct the adult's proposal.
