Options for a degree in Education

Students pursuing a career in education, or those who have already taught for a while, have seen hope, often acquire a master. Sometimes, a degree requirement is your employer. Other times, it's just a choice that increase the chances of getting a job as a teacher or school administration. As a teacher looking for a higher degree, as a rule, have three options: Master of Education (MED), Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and Master of Science in Education (MSED). It is important to distinguish this level and decide which one is right for you.

The MED is for teachers with a bachelor's degree in education and are willing to deepen their knowledge and skills in this area. You may need to earn a master's in order to continue to search for employment by the school district or at a more advanced position as coordinator of curriculum.

The MED is a professional degree, which generally terminal. Once you earn, you can not go to your promotion. If science is your ultimate goal progress, is an MED is not for you. Rather, this program is for people who already have a degree, but want to continue their studies.

The MAT degree is a good option for students who have already completed a degree in humanities, but who wants to be a teacher in this area. If you arrived at your decision to become a teacher at the end of the graduate school, or if you want to change jobs, you can usually complete the MAT in a year to qualify for teaching.

What makes the MAT degree option only? The MAT is a Liberal Arts Degree, which is not normally require a thesis. This program is a degree of professional training and is usually seen as a terminal level. It is perfect for those who want to change jobs relatively quickly treated, and what you know about the education, teachers need to be.


A degree MSED is a very concentrated, with a focus on theoretical concepts and research in education. The program is the foundation for a career as a teacher, or any number of careers related to the school administration, educational research, and other areas outside of the classroom.

A MSED degree differs from other options, because it is based a program of rigorous research, requires a thesis, and it's not terminal. The MSED is often more than the technical MED or MAT. Many graduates of these programs are to achieve a doctorate in education. If you want to get a promotion on the way, this will be your Master's program of choice. Those looking for careers in education policy may have, or school board to find these areas of concentration within such a program.

Your personal goals will ultimately determine which program you choose. They will consider the advantages and disadvantages of each option's degree, and what you hope to gain from reaching their advanced studies. The right program will prepare you for a professional in an important and worthwhile. You might also be able to find an online Master of Education program. The important thing is that you acquire a recognized qualification.
